This plan represents
approximately twenty years of mining reserves. Overall, the mine will have the capacity to
produce approximately 2.5 million tons of coal annually. The life of mine permit area contains
recoverable reserves in excess of 50 million tons. The operations and production schedule will
be dependent upon conditions encountered during the early stages of mining and the successful
marketing of coal to potential customers.
LCC coal production will be accomplished by the most efficient means to maximize the coal
resource and minimize the affects on the environmental resources. As a result, both surface and
underground room and pillar mining will be conducted simultaneously to extract coal from the
Ciruela, Primero, and other minor seams in the upper s[ratigraphic column of [he property.
Secondary or retreat mining is not proposed at this time. A general underground mine plan
layout is provided as Figure 2.05.2-1.
The mining methods to be used at the Lorencito Canyon Mine will consist of both surface and
underground mining. Equipment to be used for the underground mines will consist of
1(~ continuous miners, rubber tired haulage vehicles or continuous haulage equipment, roof bolters,
clean-up scoops, and belt conveyors. Support equipment will include mantrip vehicles, supply
trucks, face fans, and electrical distribution equipment. The surface mine equipment will
consist of overburden and interburden drills, production dozers, graders, loaders, and trucks.
Support equipment will include maintenance trucks, water truck, and supply trucks.
(2)Operations Description -Life of Mine
The life of mine operational plan for the Lorencito Canyon Mine is shown on Map 2.05.3-1,
Mine Plan. This map shows the planned schedule for the mine advance throughout the life of
mine. Separate five-year renewals will be obtained and a perfornrance bond will be posted as
necessary. The mine permit area is 17,862 acres while the initial permitted area is 3,142 acres.
The actual surface disturbance area associated with the operations will be approximately 655
acres during the first five years.
2.05-1 (revised 10/4/01)
