The
annual rainfall in this general area is approximately 20 inches per year. Coal
4iew Gulch, which drains north into the Yampa River, is an ephemeral stream
located to the east of the haul road and the mine site. Stone House Gulch is a
small, ephemeral drainage Located on the west side of the haul road and drains
directly into the Yampa River. Drainage from the mine area is into the small,
ephemeral Grassy Creek drainage located west of Coal View Gulch (Map 3) and
drains north into the Yampa River.
The Yampa River, a tributary of the Colorado River system, drains north-
west, Like other rivers in the state whose sources lie along the Continental
• Divide, snowmelt is the principal source of water for the Yampa River. Snowmelt
peak runoff occurs from about mid-April to mid-July and ranges from about 1,000
to 10,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) in the reach from Steamboat Springs to
Hayden. Base or low flow prevails for the remainder of the year and ranges from
a low of about 50 cfs upward to 200 to 300 cfs.
During high flow from snowmelt, the total dissolved solids in the river
water range from 30 to 50 milligrams per liter (mg/1) and hardness from about 25
to 75 mg/1. Trace element concentrations are near laboratory detection level,
except for iron which ranges from 20 to 50 micrograms per liter.
During base flow periods, the common cation constituents range upward to 30
to 40 mg/1 for calcium, 10 to 15 mg/1 for magnesium, and 10 to 25 mg/1 for
• sodium. Common anion concentrations during base flow for bicarbonate range from
about 60 to 140 mg/1, and for sulfate ranges from 30 to 100 mg/1. Chloride con-
- 57 - (Rev. 5/86)
