BANTA, Dlrsctor
January 6, 1989
Mr, Larry Perino
Sunnyside Gold Corporation
P.O. Box 177
Silverton, Colorado 81433
Re: Sunnyside Gold Corporation's "Sunnyside Mine and Mayflower Mill", Permit
Number M-77-378, San Juan County, American Tunnel Sludge Disposal
Dear Mr. Perino:
As discussed throughout the period from January 3rd through the 6th ,
Sunnyside Gold Corporation proposed interim disposal of the American Tunnel
sludge material atop Tailing Pond Number 4. The approved Tailing Pond Number
3 disposal site is currently capped with ice and snow, thereby minimizing
adequate pond storage capacity for additional sludge disposal.
As discussed, approximately 1,000,000 gallons of slurried pond sludge requires
removal from the American Tunnel Water Treatment/Sediment Ponds to maimtain
compliance with the American Tunnel NPDES discharge permit limitations,
specifically the suspended solids concentration. It is estimated that
approximately 400 cubic yards of solids will be disposed of, as the slurry
solid content is estimated to be 8~.
Upon review of the American Tunnel sludge, Tailing Pond Number 3 - slimes and
Tailing Pond Number 4 - sands quality (as presented in Table D-10 in the,
Consolidated Permit), it was decided that interim disposal of the sludge
material atop Tailing Pond Number 4 is allowable.
Tailing Pond Number 4 - sands quality is assumed to be similar to that of the
slimes component. Tailing Pond Number 4 - sands quality is superior to that
of Tailing Pond Number 3 - slimes, i.e. it exhibits lower metal concentrations
for each parameter measured. The quality of the American Tunnel sludge
material exhibits lower metal concentrations than Tailing Pond Number 4 for
those parameters measured, except cadmium, copper and zinc.
