- III II~II~IIIIIIIIII
LLHf..:;,~ ", .ACTION
Mr. Michael Long August 20, 1997
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St.
Denver, CO 80203
~~I ~I~II~II~~~~~ ~I~
F~ECEIVED
AUG 21 1991
Division of Minerals s Geciapl-
Dear Mr. Long,
In spite of considerable citizen opposition to the proposed
_ _ _ _ Agile Stone gravel pit and the Parkdale Recreation site on the
Arkansas 1n Fremont--County, -the--County--Commissioners issued__a-_
county permit.
We urge the Division of Minerals and Geology not to permit
this proposed gravel pit for the following reasons:
* Agile Stone plans to use 30,000 gallons of water per day to
wash down the dust. We don't think this is a good use of a limited
resource in the West.
* There is concern on the impact of continual blasting on the
nearby Big Horn Sheep during the lambing season.
* There is also concern about the impact of contamination and
silt on the trout population in Tallahassee Creek.
We also have economic and quality of life concerns. A massive
operation of this kind (55 acres and vertical wall mining which
will encompass 67 acres digging out Cactus Mountain) will adversely
effect the recreation industry. Over 70 commercial outfitters are
dependent on the Parkdale Recreation site. By conservative
estimates, over $18 million in revenue comes into Fremont County
from this site alone.
We are not opposed Lo gravel pits. Hcwever, :•re are opposed to
this gravel pit because of its location.
We would welcome an opportunity to discuss the issue with you.
Since ely,
\~~
Carmi McLean
Colorado Director
National Office • 1320 18th Street N.W. • Washington, DC 20036 • 202/457-1286
Rocky Mountain fiegional OOice • 899 Logan Street #101 • Denver, CO 80203 • 303/839-9866 • Fax 303/839-9870
PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER - c's`-.~y'~ ~ ~ ~~
