feet, shell be removed from the entire area upon which the dnm wr!1 rest, together with UoCCY or unstable materials
and deposited outside the toes of the darn. The banks of the stream channel shall be dressed to a slope oL about l+.~r:l.
A bonding trench, with slupmg sides and a bottom w+dth of nut Icss than 5 feet and depth of 4 feet, shall then be
excavated beneath the center line of [he dam the full length thereof, whicb trench shall he refilled with the most Imper-
vious materials available. The foundation of the darn shall then be lightly plowed lengthwise of the dam, to provide
proper contact between the foundaticn and the d:~m embanluneut.
Plaelnt of Lam Embankment-The materials shell 1+e Vlaced in the bonding trench and in the embankment o[ the
dom In layer ncl exceeding 6 mchrs in Ih+ckness, rifler which each layer shall he thoroughly compacted 6y a heavily
boded disc, cultivator, a corrugated or sheep's b:..t culler, the treads ..f n caterpillar or trucks, or by livestock used in the
construction. During the canstructwu prnnd, the lop of lhr. eu,b;,nkment shall be maintained as a horizontal plane the
full width end length thereof, and no side dump+ng o[ materials shall 6e penmtted. The materials shall at all times
contain au(fic+enl moist are to provide proper compacliun. Puddling of material with water shall not be permitted.
No frozen material or large clods or stones shall be uceorpurateJ w the dam. The upstream face of the dam shall 6e
Constructed with a slope riot steeper than 'L u~:1, and the downstream [ace on a slope not steeper than 2:1. The crest or
lop of the finished dam shall he riot Icss than 8 feet in width.
The upstream two-thirds of the darn shall be construcicd or the roust intperv l~W materials, such as Clay loam, or a
mixture of clay and sand, and the downstream cnc-third of more pervious material, such as sand or grave]. The up-
stream face of the dam shall be adequately protected against wncc acuon by stone riprap, or other suitable materials
when required.
Outlet-Should the state engineer sn require, there shall be located beneath the dam an outlet pipe not less then B
inches in diameter, equipprd with a control vah•c atTachrd to the upstream end of the pipe, together with suitable
mechanism for operating the cnlvc. Such outlet pipe shall be prnvuled with cutoff collars. The pipe shell be placed In e
trench bottomed in stable fu~mation, and shall be completely surrounded with well compacted impervious materials.
