III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
STATE OF COLOR~llU
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OFNATURALRESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Director
DATE: September 29, 1989
T0: Matt Haves
FROM: Susan Mowry ~j,,,,p,~O„w~
RE: Blue Ribbon Mine 100-Year Culvert
On September 26, 1989 Jim Pendleton and I inspected the Blue Ribbon mine
site. After carefully examining the 100 yr. culvert installation the
following comments, questions, and concerns were generated:
1. Will the inlet be subject to any head?
2. The current inlet needs to be fortified by increasing the berm height and
improving the riprap.
3. The pipe is laying on grade or is supported by a V ditch configuration.
How will this pipe behave when flowing full? Does this material lend
itself to unprotected installations successfully? Our concern is that it
will tear itself aoart during full flow since it is currently
unrestrained. A copy of the manufacturer's specifications may indicate
appropriate use and installation.
4. The culvert is installed at the specified sizes, 24" at the top and 18"
at the bottom.
5. The Y ditch at the outlet of the DiDe is properly constructed according
to size, riprap and geotextile placement criteria.
6. Ditch A at the base of the bench was also found to be constructed in
accordance with the approved plan.
I have attempted to contact Jim Stover about my first 3 concerns but have been
unsuccessful to date. You or I need to follow up on this. I will call him
again - you remind me to keep trying.
0112E/scg
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
