The lenCr~lt Group
An Environmental Services Company
May 27, 2005
Mr. Henry Barbe
Mountain Coal Company
P.O. Box 591
Somerset, Colorado 81434
Dear Mr. Barbe:
~v~; p 12~
QMSwn of Minecais end Geoff
Enclosed is the report for the acute biomonitoring tests performed for Mountain Coal Company
on the West Elk Mine discharge site. There was significant toxicity seen during the Daphnia
magna test. The sample fails WET (Whole Effluent Toxicity) requirements for this species.
In the Fathead minnow test there was no significant toxicity detected at any effluent
concentration. The sample passes WET requirements for this species.
A series of tests were performed in conjunction with the original effluent as part of the permit
requirements to confirm the effects of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) against other possible
contaminants. The tests appeared to confirm that TDS, in the form of alkalinity, is the most
obvious source of toxicity in the West Elk Mine 017 dischazge.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at (303) 661-9324.
Best regazds,
~~ ~~
Shannon Phelps
Senior Scientist
Enclosure(s): Report
Invoice
1341 Cannon Street • Louisville, Colorado 80027 • 303-661-9324 • Fax 303-661-9325
