Your letter described the pond
as being properly maintained and operated prior to the event and temperamre charts were included demonstrating a severe
temperature differential which resulted in snow melt during the sampling event. Sampling was conducted on Apri12, 2002 at
approximately 9:20 a.m. at Outfall 01 lA. According to the temperatures, [he high was 67 degrees with a low of 27 degrees
on Apri12, 2002. Your sediment ponds are designed to contain a 10-year/24-hour precipitation event. The self-monitoring
data you provided on your Discharge Monitoring Report is shown below:
Reported
Period Outfall Parameter
2Q02 O11A TSS (mg/1)
2Q02 O11A Total Iron (mg/1)
Permit
Results Conditions
46 (30 day avg) 35 (30 day avg)
3.14 (30 day avg) 3.0 (30 day avg)
Trapper Mining has shown that discharge occurred within 48 hours after measurable temperature differentials, resulting in
snow melt, and a discharge from Outfa11011A which was beyond your control. Therefore, we believe that Trapper Mining
Company qualifies for the less than or equal to a 10-year/24-hour precipitation alternate limit, thus waiving total suspended
_ _ _soGds_and.total iron.effluent.limits. _ . ~ _ _ _- .. ____ ___ _- ____ __ _ __ ___ _-- _ -
If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please contact me at (303) 692-3603.
Sinc
Carla J.
