STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Na[ural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8106
COLORADO
DIVISION O F
MINERALS
GEOLOGY
RECLAM gTION•M WING
SAFETY•SCIENCE
Bill Owens
INTEROFFICE Governor
MEMORANDUM Russell George
i
E
Di
ve
xecut
rector
Ronald W. Cottony
TO: Joe Dudash Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
FROM: Jim Star
SUBJECT: Water Sampling at Beaz No. 3 and Bowie No. 2 Mines
DATE: 14 January 2005
The following are the bottles and sampling instructions for the Edwards Mine Portal
spring and the Bowie No. 2 Mine seep (if it is flowing or pooling). You have three
different bottle types, 8 amber bottles (250 ml) with teal lids for MALDI and humic
acids, 4 plastic bottles (250 ml) with blue lids for metals and 8 am_ ber b_ottl_es (SOm1) with
white lids with a septum for total organic carbon.
For each sampling location you will need to fill 2 amber bottles with the teal lids
(MALDI and humic acids), 1 plastic bottle (metals) and 2 amber bottles with white lids
(total organic carbon). Just take a grab sample -that is, just dip the bottle into the water
and catch a sample (and try to fill the bottles fully while avoiding getting any sediment
from the bottom of the stream into the bottle).
I have enclosed preprinted sample labels, all you will need to fill in is the time, date and
your initials then affix them to the large amber and plastic bottles (MALDI humic acids
and metals). There are also smaller labels that I have filled out (with the exception of the
date, time and your initials) that need to be affixed to the small amber bottles (total
organic carbon).
The four sampling locations are the Edwards Mine Portal spring (from the ditch is alright,
for safety reasons) the Bowie No. 2 Mine seep (from the pool is alright), the Gunnison
River upstream of outfa11001 (about 100 yard, if possible) and the Gunnison River
downstream of outfa11001 (about 500 yards, if possible).
One of each of the four large (250 ml with teal lids) amber bottles (Edwards Portal,
Bowie, Gunnison upstream and Gunnison downstream) needs to be placed into the small
cooler box and FedEx'ed to CSU (I have attached a preaddressed shipping label). I also
have a letter for CSU that will need to be placed in the box as well.
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
