ODM 2-10-70 October 29, 1981
Memorandum
To: The Files
From: Environmental Scientist
Subject: Abandonment Examination Report on Coal Lease C-22777 and
Coal Exploration License C-28056, Rerr Coal Company.
An abandonment examination was conducted of drill sites on
October 27, 1981, by Bruce Fowler, Vance Greer and Matt McColm.
The lease and license are located in North Park, several miles east
of Walden. Terrain is gently rolling hills, with a sparse cover of
sagebrush and grasses.
Drilling was done in 1980 and 1981. A portion of license C-28056
expired when lease C-22777 was issued for the same area. The
remainder of C-28056 expires on November 2, 1981.
The inspection was made using a helicopter. Time did not allow a
thorough examinatio^ of the tracts, but the chopper hovered over a_
representative number of sites.
Drill holes were not properly abandoned. Holes were left
unplugged. Those holes completed as monitoring wells were not
completed properly. Plastic casing had been dropped in the hole
and vas no[ set in, leaving a large opening at the surface around
the casing.
Dri11 sites were no[ reclaimed. Dug pits had not been backfilled
and sit ea were not properly prepared for seeding. Cuttings were
piled at the sites.
The lessee must be contacted and instructed to properly abandon
all drill holes. Then another abandonment inspection will be
needed prior to giving consideration towards final abandonmment
approval.
`~
Bruce M.
