West Elk Mine
(1) Reclamation Timetable
Timing and locations of topsoil removal and replacement within the upper refuse disposal and the
facilities site are shown on Map 57 and Map 56. It is uncertain at this time however, when (or if)
the upper refuse disposal site will be constructed. The timing of topsoil removal and replacement
within the lower waste coal disposal site is described in Exhibit 51.
Reclamation of the disposal area will begin promptly as each phase of deposition of the refuse coal
is completed and will follow the procedures described in the Reclamation Methodology Section
and in Exhibit 50 and Exhibit 51. Refuse pile compaction and stabilization, topsoil replacement,
and revegetation will occur as portions of the refuse disposal areas aze completed. Disposal in the
designated azeas are also discussed in the Reclamation Methodology Section, Exhibit 50, and
Exhibit 51:
The surface facilities site and other disturbed azeas at the West Elk Mine will be reclaimed as
described in the Reclamation Methodology Section. Permanent reclamation of operational azeas
will not commence until actual mine operations cease, in approximately 40 years. Table 41A
provides a timetable for the major reclamation tasks, other than reclamation of the refuse piles.
Removal of the sedimentation.ponds is not included, as they will not be removed until vegetation
has been established following completion of the major reclamationtasks.
Table 41A Time Tabte for Major Reclamation Tasks
1
•
1
•

RECLAMATION TASKS APPROXIMATE TIME TO COMPLETE TASK
MAIN MINE SITE
Remove buildings/structures I6 Weeks*
Backfill mine portals & Sylvester Gulch Fan Portal 12 Weeks*
Backfill and Grade 16 Weeks
Replace topsoil 8 Weeks
Seed 2 Weeks
LONE PINE GULCH
Remove buildings/structures 6 Weeks
Backfill fan portals 4 Weeks
Backfill and Grade 6 Weeks
Replace topsoil 3 Weeks
Seed 2 Weeks
NORTH SOIL STORAGE AREA
Backfill and Grade 6 Weeks
Replace topsoil 3 Weeks
Seed 1 Week
SYLVESTER GULCH FACILITIES AREA
Remove buildings/structures 12 Weeks
Seal shafrs #1, #2, and #3 12 Weeks
Backfill and Grade 16 Weeks
Replace topsoil ]4 Weeks
Seed 3 Weeks
* Tasks could occur concurrently
2.05-83
Revised Dec. 1997 MR208; Revised Jun. 1999 TR90
