Box 990, Monte Vista, Colo. 81144
March 9, 1979
P1ard ATathias
253 ATorris
ldonte Vista, Colo. 81144
SUBJECT: Protective Grass seedings on slopes around gravel pit,
Dear Sir,
In reference to our phone conversation on 3~8~79, establishment
of a protective grass cover on slopes around reservoirs or pits
in this area have proven ineffective. Law annual precipation
(6-7 inches) limits any grass seeding without supplemental mois-
ture. This problem is compounded on sloped embankments, which
have low water holding capacity, such as your gravel pit area.
The State Highway right of way between PTonte Vista & Del. Norte
was seeded after construction several years ado. An establishment
can be seen adjacent to the paving. This has occurred from added
moisture collected on the highway. The cut areas opposite the
highway remain without cover. Tack of moisture on these elopes
has rendered the seeding ineffective. _
If seeding of pit slopes is demanded only drought resistent
~ speci.es should be used. It should be realized that a very high
mortality will occur, if grass establishment can be obtained,
Yours truly, ,
~~' Jim Schaffer
CC: Jim Swartz
RECEIVED
~~ MAR 1 ~ 191
RECL^:"!i~'11 iCN SEC i ION
Colo.
