Renner
Reclamation Specialist
Mined Land Reclamation Division
1313 Sherman Street, Room 423
Denver, Colorado 80203
RE: Midway Pit
Dear Mr. Renner:
Attached please find a completed referral form on the Midway Pit, your file
reference M-88-018. After reviewing the mining information filed with the
Clerk ,and Recorder we felt that it was important to update you concerning
the stz~tus of the project and approvals by EI Paso County.
~At least six (6).requests for mining various portions of this 540 acre parcel
have been submitted since 1972. The only area being mined that is cur-
rently permitted by EI Paso County is an approximate 40 acre tract located
in Section 22. This area was approved in 1972, apparently prior to adoption
of the mining regulations that the State currently has in place. It is likely
that mining in Section 22 is currently occurring outside the boundaries per-
mitted by EI Paso County (File Reference AL-72-7). This was discussed
with Anne Baldridge at an on-site visit on June 4, 1987.
Two (2) separate approvals for mining in Section 27 have previously been
granted by EI Paso County. It is my understanding that those areas have
been rained and subsequently reclaimed.
This Department had periodic discussions with the operators of the mine from
1985 through 1988, in order to bring the mining operation into conformance
with both our regulations and your regulations. We suggested consolidation
