Preliminary Opinion -Groundwater lntpacts of Haldorson Proposed Gravel Pit
Dear Mrs Wiesner
As per our pltotte conversations and meetings earlier this week, WestWater Associates
has undertaken a preliminary hydrogeologic evaluation of the proposed 160-acre
Haldorsafc Gravel Mine, an Spring Creek Mesa You requested we review portions of
their application fur permit to the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, CMLRB,
and Mofctrose County. You directed us to conduct field inspections, water right and
registered well location and adjudication, review and inspect tlce property to determine if
the proposed excavation would impact existing water resources on the Mesa.
We have resided on Spring Creek Mesa fur Z5 years and have investigated groundwater
conditions in numerous arras for subdivision applications, gravel pits, septic
coutanciitatiotc altd ditch and canal losses. We have been, and are currently, retained by
gravel operators to advise them as co ,groundwater impacts and litigation, reclamation and
pit stability. In addition, we have assisted in water rights and evacuation of additional
water for Silver Springs Trout Farnt (located 1/3 mile east of the proposed pit),
supervised construction of alluvial wells along LaSalle Road, which supply a large
mobile )tome park, and observed the iitigation diversion and application of irrigation
water prauices on the Mesa for many years.
The pit is proposed for locatiufc on the east half, east half, Scdion 24, T49N, R10W,
NMPM. It is bounded on the north by LaSalle Road, west by 6175 Road and south by
relatively new subdivision of lars~er than average homes. The pit would be bounded on
the east by the Bean Rancft on tlce southern '/. of cite pit, and [he Nation's "Hillside
Hontestrad", along the northern '/. mile. The property currently is irrigated farm ground,
and one of the larber contiguous operational farms left on the mesa. The current owner is
the George fancily. The ground surface slopes gently front southwest to north and
northeast, with irrigation water being derived from the C! and CJN Laterals. Irrigation
water is spread via row crops and/or flood irrigation in a northerly and northeasterly
direction. The Bean Ranch to the oast contains approximately 100 acres of irrigated farm
ground. The entire land parcel west of 6175 Road is similar in nature in that it is all
irrigated rasture and croplarcd. Again, the ground slopes gently Crom southwest to
northe:ut toward the pit.
EXHIBIT
a
