. __ _
~• ,' DE~IPTION OF WATER RESOURCES' III ~IIIII'll'~II'll
~~~~~ V ~D
Ground Water
Ground water occurs under the property in th~O~11>~Y~1
deposits of sand and gravel which underlie the floodplain
of the South Platte River (Figure 2) . The s~i~t®~v1N~7l,AMATION
deposits range in thickness from less than o@~o.~pf~ofaQaldr~~Resouroes
western part of the property to mare than 25 feet in the
central part of the property. The deposits are 15-20 feet
thick on the eastern side of the property near the South
Platte River. Ground water in the sands and •ravels flows to
the northeast, toward and along the course of the South Platte
River. Most of the flow in the river ciurlcig the late summer
months is derived from ground water discharged from the allu-
vial deposits. In rPrent years, wells have been constructed
in the sands and gra~~ls to provide water for irrigation
and other uses. Properly constructed wells in the vicinity
of the mining site could produce as much as 1000 gallons per
minute (gpm).
Numerous wells Dave been developed in the vicinity of
the mining site (Figure 2). Most of the wells on the pro-
perty have been developed for irrigation usage; there are
five irrigation wells within or adjacent to the mining site.
The wells that surround the property, principally on the
west, have been developed for domestic usage. All the
homes west of the Riverd„le Road have ir.divid~al wells. Some
of the domestic wells may be used for lawn irrigation or
stock watering. Except for a domestic well and an irri-
gation well located in the NW'; of the NE; of Section 34
which belongs to a private landowner,the wells on or within
the vicinity of the mining site either were purchased or
were developed Y,y the County to provide water for use in
the Fairgrounds, complex. The domestic wells are permitted
for 15 gpm and the irrigation wells are permitted for dis-
charges ranging from 300-1000 qpm.
'Phere are approximately nine deep •..•ells in the vicinity
of the mining site. These range in depth from 312 feet
to 510 feet beneath t17e land surface and withdraw water
from the aquifers in the Dawson and Arapahoe Formations and
the Laramie-Fox Hills Sandstone. Some of the domestic wells
on the western edge of the property penetrate these aquifers.
Ground wa*~r in these deep aquifers is confined end is separated
from the ground water in the sands and gravels by thick layers
of clay and shale, Water use from the deer squifers is
not affected by water use in the shallow aquifers. Water
levels in these de: wells can be as much as 20 to 40 feet
beneath the land surface. Well yields are generally low,
ranging from 10 to 60 gpm.
-3-
