CONEY, DIRECTOR
4955 EAST 74TH AVENUE
(303)853-7000
FAX (303) 853-7015
www.co.adams.co.us
COMMERCE CITY, COLORADO 80022-1535
August 15, 2001
Robert Ray, City Planner
City of Brighton
Community Development
22 South 4's Avenue
Brighton, CO 80601
Dear Mr. Ray:
This Department has received notification from the Division of Minerals and Geology
that Adams County RV Park, LLC dba 124' Estates Partners has applied fora 112
Reclamation Permit, Case Number 2001-085, to restart mining operations on a reclaimed
pit on the SW corner of 124's Avenue and Brighton Road. This pit was mined and
reclaimed under a mining permit issued by Adams County in 1984. The reclamation plan
for the pit was open space and lake.
It appears, from the Minerals and Geology application, the intent is to further mine the pit
to a deeper level and then line the pit with clay shale. The pit could then be used for
water storage. The City of Brighton's Public Works Department has been approached
with the intent to sell the water storage to the City. We understand the applicant has also
applied for annexation to the City of Brighton.
In 1986 and ] 999, case applications were brought to the County with proposals to fill the
gravel mine. Both applications were turned down. The 1999 application was denied, in
part' because oftraffic impact concerns at the 124u and Highway 85 intersection. The
Henderson neighborhood was adamantly opposed to the operation. Neighbors to the site
believe they were promised open space, a lake, and a quiet rural atmosphere once mining
was finished.
While this Department has not received an application for the newly proposed activities
from the City for review and comment, since the site is still under County jurisdiction, we
feel obligated to bring to your attention the sensitivity ofthis area in the County.
BOARD OF COUNTY ELAINE T VALENTE TED STRICKLAND MARTIN J.
