_ _ __ N~ .vSr.- ~! _ _
III III III'll llll III
999
rfErloRANDLRI
DATE: march 26, 1982
T0: Carol Russell /r
FROhI: David Craig I
r j. lll///
RE: lst Draft of CHIS - Ground Slater for the Canon Citv Coal Field.
Pursuant to your request, here is a first draft of the Cumulative Hydrologic
Impact Statement (CHIS) for ground water in the Canon City Coal Field. The
surface water portion of this document will be forthcoming upon the
completion of Jerry Zimpfer's review of the stream diversion situation.
Please review this document and comment accordingly.
Sections 34-33-110(2)(1) and 34-33-114(2)(c) of the "Colorado Surface
Coal Mining Reclamation Act" require that the Division make an assessment
of the probable cumulative hydrology impacts of all anticipated mining
in the area of a proposed mining operation. This cumulative impact
assessment is for all current and anticipated mining in the Canon City
Coal Field, in Fremont County, Colorado. This includes the following
mines: Dorchester, GEC Strip, Newlin Creek, and Twin Pines. A map
prepared by the Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program (1982) shows
the locations of these mines. Also shown on this map is the locations
of the many mining operations that occurred in the past that are now
inactive. The remainder of this assessment will be subdivided into a
"Ground Water" section and a "Surface Water" section.
Description of the Existing Environment
Ground Water
All of the mining operations considered in this assessment are located near
the axis of the Chandler Syncline. The strata generally dip to the
southwest at about 6° - 10°. All of the mining is taking place stratigraphically
in the middle portion of the Cretaceous Veremejo Formation. Eleven coal
seams occur in this formation and have thicknesses ranging from 1 to 11
feet. The mines are generally located at or near a coal outcrop. The
existence of many unreclaimed spoils and waste piles has greatly altered
the natural topography.
