Since that time Northern Coal Company <br />has been preparing data fora determination of how to manage <br />the excessive mine waters. Northern Coal will be submitting <br />soon a permit modification request for periodic discharge of <br />treated waters from its settling pond at the Northern No. 1 <br />Mine. <br />In recent weeks an additional problem has arisen. Surface <br />preparation of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation permitted <br />area has exposed a spring which has reached a flow of as much <br />as 30 gallons per minute. Northern Coal's testing of the <br />spring water indicates that the water is of potable quality. <br />(See attached water quality analysis). Northern Coal plans to <br />divert and store this water in the future, but it will take <br />approximately ten weeks to engineer and permit the diversion <br />and storage. <br />If the spring flow continues, it will cause the settling pond <br />to reach capacity. Northern Coal, therefore, requests authoriz- <br />ation for emergency bypass of these spring waters. It will be <br />necessary to empty the settling pond approximately once a week <br />until the spring water storage facility is constructed. <br />Northern Coal is also preparing plans for expansion of the . <br />
