It
was amended on April 17, 1987. The system will consist of two concrete septic tanks on the north
side of the County Road dischazging to a leach bed on the south side of the County Road. The site
for the leach bed was selected because no suitable soil exists north of the County Road.
Percolation tests were conducted and an 8 foot deep hole was examined at the leach field site.
Two of our big concerns when issuing a permit are that there be no resultant groundwater
degradation and that no ponding of sewage occur at the leach field site. The soil examinations
revealed a silty loam soil at least 8 feet deep. No evidence of groundwater was revealed and none
is expected throughout the seasons. The soil is very suitable as both a biological and physical filter
to protect the groundwater. I believe the irrigation ditch (term?)just south of the County Road was
running water at the time the soil was examined.
In the amended permit, the possible influence of the imgation ditch on theleach bed was addressed
in comments #5 and #6. Comment #5, "Maintain 50 foot setback from leach bed to irrigation
ditch." Comment #6, "Berm uphill side(s) of leach field to divert irrigation water." A copy of the
permit is enclosed.
There is nothing in the const^tcticn of the !each bed to preclude that area form being used for
agricultural purposes. It is perfectly acceptable to grow and harvest hay or other crops over the
leach bed.
Please contact this office if you have any questions or concerns.
RW/Im
enc.
cc: Jce Carpio
La Plata County •P.O.
