Colfax Avenue
(Westland Bank Building)
Lakewood, Colorado 80215
Re: Energy Fuels Corporation - Application for Permit
Our File No. C-036-81
Dear Mr. Glueck:
In response to your April 13, 1981 comment on the application for a coal
mining and reclamation permit by Energy Fuels Corporation, I would like
to inform you of the status of the application and further explain the
Division's position on public comments.
Energy Fuels is requesting a five-year permit to conduct both surface
and underground mining at their Mine N3. The Energy Mine N3 has already
reached its maximum area of surface disturbance; only 250,000 tons of
surface coal remain to be mined in the next 2 years. Underground coal
development is expected to Last another 8 years. The permit being re-
quested will cover both surface and underground mining, as well as re-
clamation of all surface disturbed areas. Soon after the Division issues
a permit, Energy Fue15 will begin reclamation activities on areas mined
since 1978. The fact that additional surface mining is small, additional
blasting is not needed, and reclamation of the site will be corrmnncing
soon, should mean that noise, dust, and aesthetic conditions will improve
at the site.
The Division will insure that Energy Fuels takes all measures necessary
to minimize noise, air and water pollution at the site. Extensive moni-
toring of surface aad groundwater will be requirer7 (and is currently in
use) to predict, verify, and correct any changes in surface or groundwater
quality and quantity.
AZthough the public hearing deadline was April 27, 1981, the Division will
accept any written comments on the application. If you have any specific
problems or concerns that pertain to the mining operation, we would
welcome your comments. However, for your comrrents to be of meaningful
use, you must give us specific problems that you would like to see corrected.
