Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Minerals & Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Rm. 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Lorencito Canyon Mine
Dear Mr. Gorham:
We have reviewed the information on the archaeological
investigations for the sedimentation ponds, fill areas, power
lines, a water line and the data recovery at the Jeff Place
(5LA7186). Our comments follow.
Power Lines & Water Line
It is our understanding that the P-3 Portal Power Line has been
rerouted to clearly avoid site 5LA1966 and that the Load Out Power
Line will avoid and have no effect to site 5LA7112 and 5LA7728, a
potentially eligible prehistoric site.
The Water Line is located in areas where no cultural resources were
identified. We concur with the no effect determination and with
the monitoring stipulation since visibility was poor in some areas.
Sedimentation Ponds & Fill Areas
Since no significant cultural resources were identified in the
areas of Sedimentation Ponds 001, 002, 003, 005, 007, 008 and 009
and Fill Areas 2, 3, 5 and 8, we concur with the no effect
determination.
The Jeff Place (5LA7186)
From the description in the report and based on the treatment plan
reviewed by Kevin Black of our office, we concur that the field
work phase at 5LA7186 is completed. The research and archival
phases are still in process. Lorencito Coal Company may proceed
with construction in this area.
