Dept. of i~!aturat ~i~cources
Dear Mr. Savage:
Enclosed please find some of the information which you request-
ed at our March 30 meeting. These materials should answer, or clarify,
many of the questions discussed in your April 5 summary of that meet-
ing. The only information still lacking is that which requires fur-
ther study. We will forward additional material on water quality and
hydrologic impacts, operations description, backfilling and grading,
topsoil replacement depths, and roads as soon as it becomes available.
We are planning to wait until the end of the review process to submit
a worst case estimate for bonding purposes.
Flatiron Companies no longer has plans to use the Northgate load-
out for shipment of coal out of North Park. Because of this change
in plans, we would like to discontinue the permitting process for that
parcel of land. We will renew our efforts on this project, in the
future, if rail transportation from Walden becomes economically feas-
ible.
Scott Patten and I made an inspection of the "abandoned under-
ground mine" (Plate 17A) which is adjacent to the area we will be
mining. We determined, as a result of that inspection, that what
was previously called an abandoned mine is simply a small pit with
no former mine workings. The abandoned McCullum mine (Plate 1),
which is described in the archeological section of the permit ap-
plication, has already been mined through without any adverse safety
impacts.
With regard to the Bureau of Land Management haul road, I have
been unable to locate any reference to a 20 mph speed limit imposed
in our right-of-way lease. We feel that 30 mph as posted, is a safe
and reasonable speed limit for that road.
An inspection was made of the area you delineated for more in-
tensive soil sampling. It was determined, during that inspection,
that all of the topsoil scheduled to be removed from that area has
already been stockpiled. As a result of this finding, we obtained
samples from the topsoil stockpiles. The results of the analyses
