DEPT. OF NATUIiAI RlSOURCES
Tfi is letter is to verify a telephone conversation between you and Paul
Mohr, Superintendent of Grand Mesa Coal Company-Red Canyon )I1 Mine. Paul called
Tuesday, March 24, 1981, to request permission to drill at least one hole and
potentially a second hole depending upon the outcome of the first hole. The
reason for the hole is to determine the potential danger immediately ahead in
the mining projections. It is our understanding that approval was given to
start immediately on the first hole. Reclamation requirements would be deter-
mined pending further review by the Division.
Considering the safety of our men and mine, we felt that it was necessary
to do further exploration. Roof conditions have rapidly deteriorated in the
last 300-400 ft. and Ward Creek lies 300-400 ft. ahead. The geologic characteris-
tics of the alluvial material in the area did not give any indication that Ward
Creek's location was dependent upon features of the formation below the alluvium;
therefore, no effort was made to drill near the creek. Potential problems that
are being looked for are local poor roof conditions, wide spread poor roof con-
ditions, faults or shear zones near the creek, alluvium too close to the coal
seam, or the coal seam being eroded out. Rotary drilling the cover will indicate
the thickness of the alluvium. Coring will start 10-20 ft. above the coal seam
and will continue into the floor 5 ft. Coring will indicate whether poor roof
conditions continue, or whether there are elevation discrepancies indicating
faulting.
The two sites picked are in the SW's, NEB Sec 11, T-135, R 95W, GPM. The
first one is located approximately 470 ft. south of the north line and 330 ft.
west of the east line of the quarter. The second hole may be approximately
100 ft. south of the north line and 500 ft. west of the east line o£ the quarter-
quarter. Drilling started Friday, March 27, 1981.
