Grand Junction Pipe and Supply Company,
Elam Construction Compan Inc., Whitewater Building Materials Corporation and United Companies
of Mesa County, addressed the Mined Land Reclamation Board (MLRB), at their August 2004
meeting, regarding permittee responsibilities for tamarisk control on permitted mine sites. The MLRB
directed DMG staff, with input from mine operators, to formulate a policy for dealing with tamarisk
and Russian olive control on mine sites. DMG is currently in the process of writing this policy for
presentation to the MLRB at their October 27-28, 2004 meeting. The outcome of this meeting may
affect the content of, or the need for, a weed control plan as required by DMG,
Due to these circumstances, DMG has extended the corrective action due date, for problem no. 4
listed in the May 11, 2004 inspection report for this site, to January 3, 2005. This should allow
enough time to put together a tamarisk control plan (dependent on MLRB ruling), submit and secure
approval of a revision to the permit, and implement the control plan during the 2005 field season.
DMG has extended the corrective action due date for problem no.s 1, 2, and 3 to October 20, 2004.
If you need additional information, please contact me at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Grand
Junction Field Office, 101 South Third Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501,
telephone no. 970-243-6368.
Sincerely,
'' ~~~~i~
Steve S.
