A1Z required annual reports are o.~ file. <br />3. Tree plantings have heel: moderately successful: <br />a) Black walnuts have lo:/ survival rate. Sur vivezs are not as vigorous as expected. Thi.S <br />is possibly due to the alkaline soil and the protective tubing used. AlI of the walnut tree <br />planted in the southern portion of the western row have died. <br />b) Cottonwoods also have low survival rate. The only vigorous survivor has cytospora ca nk~ <br />disease, However, there are numerous volunteer cottonwoods in the sandy soil around the <br />pond. <br />c) Plums have fair survival rate, especially in the southern row. Plums planted in <br />thickets in 1978 have died. <br />d) Junipers are doing very well. <br />4. Drip irrigation is used twice weekly. <br />RECINi[~PIDATZONS <br />. 1. Operator might consider using wocd shingles for' tree protection rather than wrap around <br />tubing. Tubing is of dubious valve as it hinders leaf formation, available sunlight, and <br />'bites' into bark (visible on cottonwood in western row). <br />2. Operator may want to contact Northeastern College, CSU, 1ocaZ nurseries and/or the SCS <br />for additional information on windbreak plantings and specific shrubs suitable for this <br />site. , <br />3. A good source of low cost trees and shrubs may be tlJe Colorado State ForesCry's nursery <br />located in Fort Collins. <br />4. The Division applluds the operator for his aggzesive and environmentally sound reclamation <br />studies and plan. It is highly commendable.
