EnforcemenC
action forthcoming.
1. Phase X and a portion of Y has been backfiZled, sloped and seeded (1980). The reveyetation
attempt on this slope which facing the Gunnison River has completely failed. Only a few
scattered blades of Indian Rz:ceyrass are growing other than assorted annual weeds. No erosion
problem, cattle are allowed to graze the area. The slope is 3:1 with scattered large boulders
(a very nee job.)
2. Stage 1 is actively being mined. Tree trunks and stumps are being placed in the bottom
of the pit for future fish habitat. Slopes are being set at 3:1 where possible. Volunteer
cottonwood and tamarisk are becoming established in wet areas.
Z. The settling end in stage~2 and 3 is being expanded.
4. MSXA "requires" berming on~roads, small berm exists along river road on river side.
Large cobbles are being dumped on the river bank as zip-rap.
;. The site contains a great many large cottonwood trees, certain cottonwood trees are being
-alvayed. .
RECOD1FtE1J DATIONS
1. Due to the large'number of acres of disturbance which will ultimately need to be revegetat~
and the evident failure of the reveyetation attempt in phase X, the operator should consider
planting a number of study plots utilizing varying types of native vegetation and establishment
techniques commonly used in the area. The Ioca1 farmers, ranchers, Division of Highways and
the Soil Conservation 5'ervice,may be of great service in finding a seed mix and establishment
techniques which would work on this site with a minimum of expense..
2. If possible, the operato2' should F:eep cattle off of at'eas to be revegetated until the
vegetation is established. This would certainly aid in the reveyetation effozt and in the
Tony run, save the operator money.
;.
