~ III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ~
999
- -..~~vED
DEC 2 8 2000
Carl Mount Division of Minerals and Geology
Division ofMinerals and Geology
Dept. of Natural Resources
1311 Sherman St, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
~/- 9'f-v9G
Deaz Mr. Mount:
I am writing to you at the request of Jim and Becky Krakel of Timberline Trucking.
They came to me for historic information on my late Father, Doyle Russell's, gravel pit
north of Wellington. They were concerned about the estimations made by an inspector as
to how much total material had been taken out of the pit. I managed the pit from the
time of my Father's tragic farm accident in 1996 until the Krakels purchased it in
November of this year.
My Father and Mother purchased the property on which the pit is located in 1953. A few
years later, they began taking small amounts of gravel for our family's use out of the azea
that is now the gravel pit. This practice expanded to allowing neighbors and family
members to hand fill their pickup trucks with gravel for use on concrete steps,
sandboxes, etc.
The azea in which the pit is located is in a natural gulley which is intersected by Interstate
25. If you look at the azea on the west side of the highway, it will give you a fair idea of
what the east side looked like prior to any disturbances. It appeazs that the inspector may
have been mistaken about the amount of material removed to date due to the unusual
terrain on which the pit is located. He may also have included a significant amount of
land in his estimation that was merely graded farm land.
I have placed temporary flags to locate what I believe to be the western boundary of the
pit itself. Jim Krakel has indicated that he will now drive T-posts where the flags aze
located so everyone concerned has the same concept as to the boundaries of the pit.
Please feel free to give me a call at 970-568-7610 if you have any questions
Sincerely,

Gladys A. Russell
