Portland Limestone
Quarry.
The Division will conduct a review of blasting techniques used at the quarry for the dates mentioned in your letter. We are
requesting records of their blasting -number of blast holes, amount and type of charge, time delays and seismic
information. We should be able to determine whether it is possible for ground motion or av blast to reach your home with
enough energy to be of concern.
We are suggesting that Holnam, Inc. contals you and request to conduct apre-blazt survey of your home and to obtain
permission to place seismic monitors on your property. We suggest that you allow these activities, if requested by the
company. A pre-blast survey would be for the purpose of recording the present condition of your foundation, walls, etc. to
document whether or not blazting may be related to the problem of cracking.
The Division suggests that you have a structural engineer look at your home. He may be able to determine if another
problem such az settling of fill material under or against your foundation is causing the problems you are experiencing.
This is a somewhat common problem Cor the First few years after homes are built, if fill material is not properly compacted.
You may also want to have that individual determine if your home is built on expansive soils which may be causing your
foundation to move.
We will inform you of the results of our review.
Please call if you have questions.
Sincerely,
~~-~~0~~ ~;e~~r"f~
Larry D. ehler
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Jim C.
