During my quarterly visit on July 12-13, 2007 I repaired the mine LD.
sign (photo attached) and met with Bryan Duff of Goff Engineering who will provide the
engineer's certification shortly. I also met with John Mares of C&J Gravel and we
walked the north end of the North Pit to assess the erosion you noted and devise a plan
for repair. C&J is going to walk an excavator to the erosion azea and excavate a "U"
shaped drop channel, then armor the channel with a base of filter rock overlain with large
riprap. They aze also going to install lengths of straw logs within the rills on the North
Pit. This work should be complete within the next two-three weeks.
I also assessed revegetation growth at the site and am particulazly pleased with the
growth of the perennial seed mix. Of note were significant contributions by western,
bluebunch, slender, and intermediate wheatgrasses, mountain brome, Indian ricegrass,
and sanfoin. I estimated the average live vegetation cover from locations at the
equipment yazd, the PRSA, North Pit haul road and North Pit to be 50% with another
30% cover contribution by litter, composed of mulch and last yeaz's vegetation growth
(photo of North Pit Haul Road slope attached). Other than the rills on the North Pit
which appeaz to have stabilized, there appears to be no significant sediment transport or
erosion on the Carbon Junction Mine reclamation. Based on these observations, I would
like to pursue a concurrence from the Division that would acknowledge that the sediment
control system is no longer needed. To that end, I would like to meet to discuss the
demonstration that would satisfy the Division on this point.
