Box 3609
Grand Junction, Condo 81502
Re: Corey Grav/el Pit, Permit No. M-1987-024; Abatement of Inspection Issues.
Deaz Rick:
Bill Owens
Governor
Greg E. Walther
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Acting Division Director
This Office has received United's responses to.the issues raised during the August 16`s, 2002 inspection
of the above referenced permitted site. Both issues raised aze considered abated with the responses
received. Staff comments concerning the responses aze listed below.
1. Knapweed was not found on site as stated in the inspection report.
Please accept staff's apology for the misidentification. The area in question was difficult to access
do to irrigation water at the time. The weeds in question appeared to be knapweed from the
distance observed. United's efforts to spray Canadian Thistle along the permit boundazy are
appreciated. Given the fact the United is not going to renew the lease with Mr. Corey for operations
at this site a TR for Weed Control will not be required. The new leasee will have to address the
issue.
2. Topsoil appears to be insufficient to reclaim the site.
Staff did observe two piles of materials that could have been topsoil materials, along with the
materials imported by United. The stockpile origination was in question. Staff calculations showed
approximately 7,000 cu/yd of material would be necessazy at a minimum of 6 inches deep to
accomplish reclamation. The addition of the materials in those two stockpiles would put the total
topsoil material available close to that figure. United's calculations of the on site material concur
with that estimated figure. Thank you for the clazification.
If you need additional information, please contact me at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Grand
Junction Field Office, 101 S. 3rd St., Suite 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501, telephone no.
970.241.1117.
Sincerely,
~~ I~l ~~G/~~
G.
