Fair Chance Prospect
P-1981-038
Type of Mine- Underground Adit Commodity Mined -Gold and silver
PRE-RECLAMATION SITE CONDITIONS
The Fair Chance Prospect is a small gold and silver mine located within or just outside the southern city limits of
Cripple Creek. The site is located on the east side of State Highway 67, the mine dump being visible uphill from the
highway. Prospecting took place in a pre-existing adit that was re-entered beginning in 1981 or 1982. In 1992 the
AML Program installed an adit door and grate 75'in-by the portal under a cost-share agreement with the permittee.
The portal is located on the Ellen McGregor and the Rob Roy(ms 8938) patented mining claims. In 2004, the Mined
Land Reclamation Board revoked the permit and forfeited the bond. $1,882.90 was deposited in the construction
forfeit account for reclamation.
The mine is reached via a 450' access road with an unlocked steel gate. According to the permit file, the mine
portal and dump were pre-existing and permit related disturbance included improvement of the access road and
construction of an assay lab. The portal had been extensively timbered and the outermost 20' to 30' had rotted
and cracked to the point of near collapse. This presented an extreme hazard to the public. The assay lab,
which was beginning to lean, was a wood frame structure measuring 15' by 20'with sheet metal siding,
fiberglass insulation, and a wood floor. An adjoining structure had collapsed. The access road had been
washed out over the years.
BIDDING/CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION
Type of Bid Documented Quote
(circle one) Formal - Bid as the Project, PKA-
PO Number Contractor Name&Address Construction Bond Amount
Berry Trucking & Excavating Inc. A Hyundai Robex 130LC track excavator was used to dismantle and excavate
the outer 30' of the portal back to more stable bedrock. The timber and trash were disposed and the excavated
rock was mounded in front of the portal to keep vehicles back but still allow access by foot. The assay lab was
dismantled and disposed at the Cripple Creek transfer station. There were no funds available to reclaim the
access road, however, if left alone, it will continue to undergo natural reclamation over the years. The project
manager was Gary Curtiss.
Remaining Reclamation Requirements and Estimated Cost: None
c:\gary\revoked\fair chance\fairchanceco.doc
