Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program
CLOSEOUT REPORT
ACTIVE MINE BOND FORFEITURE PROJECTS
Permit Information
Permit Number: Operator Name: Mine Name:
P-1992-024 Colorado Environmental Recovery Brazil Mill Site
Type of Mine - Tailings Pond Commodity Mined — Silver, Gold
PRE-RECLAMATION SITE CONDITIONS
This site was inspected by the Minerals Program as a possible un-permitted operation on October 10, 1992. It contained
gravity and water separation devices including drums, a plastic lined settling/water storage pond, a semi-truck with
water/gravity separation devices, a backhoe, trommel, shaker table, and other water gravity separation devices used to
recover gold and silver from the Lamartine Mine tailings. All activities were confined to the tailings pond. No chemicals were
observed during the inspection. The operator, Colorado Environmental Recovery, subsequently submitted a Notice-Of-Intent
with a $2,000.00 bond. In October 7, 2007, the Mined Land Reclamation Board declared the site to be abandoned, revoked
the permit, and forfeited the $2,000.00 bond.
On August 12, 2005, Gary Curtiss of the Abandoned Mine Program inspected the site. The tailings pond was divided into
two separate ponds separated by a causeway. Water coming from the Lamartine Mine above the site a few hundred feet,
flowed down the county road past the Brazil Mill Site. Much of the water entered the tailings pond through a breach in the
berm along the county road. It appeared that most of the water in the tailings pond was from this source. Water grab
samples taken from each side of the tailings pond were composited and analyzed for metals and WAD cyanide. Lab
analyses indicated that metals concentrations were below the 'no effect' metals toxicity values to Rainbow, Brown, and Brook
Trout as outlined in the Draft Clear Creek Basin, 1989 report. WAD cyanide was not detected. An attempt was made to
locate any seeps or springs on the hillside below the tailings pond for sampling but none were found. It was decided that the
best use of the limited bond amount would be to repair the berm along the road and prevent that source of water from
entering the tailing pond.
BIDDING/CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION
Type of Bid(Dir ce t
PO Number Contractor Name &Address Construction Bond Amount
NA Cat's Backhow Service, Ltd. There is an abundance of refuse at the site including abandoned vehicles and empty
drums that could be cleaned up but the trash may not be related to the former operation. $2,000- $4,000 will probably be
needed to clean up th trash. /►
77/
Project Manager: 9 (f
Supervisor:
c:\gary\revoked\brazilmillsiteco.doc
