City of
Thornton krAlroswing
Infrastructure Maintenance Center Infrastructure Department
12450 Washington Street 720-977-6600
Thornton, CO 80241-2405 FAX 720-977-6202
www.cityofthornton.net
January 15, 2019
Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety
1313 Sherman Street
Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
RE: Proposed Mine Name: Tucson South Resource
Permit: M-2004-0448
To Whom It May Concern,
The city of Thornton appreciates the opportunity to comment on the proposed mine
known as the Tucson South Resource, (M-2004-044) and is located at or near Sections
1 and 12, Township 1 South, Range 67 West, 6th Prime Meridian. The city understands
the proposed mine will include excavation to maximum depths of about 50 feet below
the ground surface and reclamation will involve creation of two lined municipal water
storage reservoirs and backfilling, grading and revegetation to create stable reservoir
slopes and upland meadows.
The city's Rogers Reservoir is located north and immediately adjacent to the proposed
Tucson South Resource mine. Rogers Reservoir is lined with a slurry wall keyed into
bedrock and actively stores up to 2,212 acre-feet of water. The city owns and operates
a pump station at Rogers Reservoir used for the conveyance of water.
The city understands that mining activities will occur on or within two hundred (200) feet
of Rogers Reservoir. Thornton requests the Applicant to demonstrate how the mining
of the Tucson South Resource mine will not damage or impact the stability of Rogers
Reservoir or its associated infrastructure. In addition, Thornton requests the opportunity
for engineering review of the proposed plans of the mine.
