CpIO,P .
9
V) pl DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
GCJ * David H.Getches,Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
1g-6 DAVID C.SHELTON, Director
Richard D Lamm
Governor
0
I'
DATE: May 19, 1986
TO: Jeff Deckler
FROM: Dale Plume
RE: REVISED REVIEW OF COAL RIDGE NO. 1 MINE AHR (1985)
The following is a list of questions relating to observations concerning
anomalous data and missing data in the 1985 Annual Hydrology Report.
✓1 . Well OW-4L is missing field parameters for 8/22/85, where are these?
✓2. OW-4L is missing bicarbonate and alkalinity measurements for
12/18/85, where are these?
3. OW-4L has metals arsenic, cadmium, iron, manganese, and molybdenum
that exceed various regulatory standards, please explain,
4. OW-4L and other wells may have detection limits set too high for
parameters such as molybdenum, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium, etc. ,
please correct.
5. OW-4L has high SO4 levels sometimes exceeding baseline, please
explain.
oK 6. OW-8 water quality gets poorer (TDS, SO4), exceeding PDWS
regulatory parameters in 9/25 - 12/18/85 sampling periods; levels
double to triple previous periods, please explain.
7. Well OW-11 seems to be affected by river stage; consequently, is
probably affected by downward leaching and upward remobilization of
salts (NaCl ), and may indicate an area of poor irrigation
potential ; please verify if this is correct.
8. Well OW-14 may be indicating dispersal Of SO4 (from Mancos
Shale?) in rock tunnel spoil (tailings) that is being used to pave
roads. Additionally, an extremely high nitrate content is present
in samples (from blast residue?); could this also be caused by use
of spoil for roadbase? This may be from fertilizer residue,
however, used in agricultural applications on fields near the
mine. Please determine if this is occurring and what steps will be
taken to correct it.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (303) 866-3567
