RECEIVED
SPRAGUE STONE STORMWATER MAR 02 2015
MANAGEMENT PLAN (SWMP) NARRATIVE DIVISION OF RECLAMATION
Prepared by: Jason Miles, P.E. MINING AND SAFETY
February 25, 2015
SITE LOCATION
Sprague Stone is an existing sandstone quarry encompassing 62 acres and located at County Road 27
and County Road 32C in Larimer County, Masonville, Colorado, approximately six (6) miles west and five
(5) miles north of Loveland. Additional site location information as follows:
Principal Meridian
Section
Township
Range
Quarter Section
Latitude (N)
Longitude (W)
SITE DESCRIPTION
6th
22
06 North
70 West
Northeast
40 deg / 28 min / 41.98 sec
105 deg /12 min /52.51 sec
The site generally slopes west to east at approximately 5:1 with exception of smaller areas that slope
toward the north, west and south property lines parallel to those property lines, respectively. While a
portion of the site has been previously mined and /or reclaimed, most of the site is vegetated with native
grasses and ground cover and sparsely populated with native trees. This particular quarry is unique with
regard to the color of sandstone it produces, thus the quarry product has significant value as reflected in
numerous building projects in the region.
POTENTIAL POLLUTANT SOURCES / MATERIAL INVENTORY / MATERIALS HANDLING AND SPILL PREVENTION
The Sprague Stone Quarry operation involves the use of typical heavy equipment and machinery used
for excavation and mining of stone. Potential pollutants include fuels (diesel and /or gasoline), oils,
lubricants, glycol coolants and detergents /cleaners associated with maintenance of heavy equipment
and machinery. If fuel is stored on site, it will be stored in small quantities in a designated, secured
location, out of the way of mining activities. Other liquids or fine grained soluble substances capable of
polluting storm water discharge will be stored in original containers and sheltered in secure locations.
Material wastes will be properly disposed of at approved, off -site landfills.
Quarry mining entails considerable land disturbance for the purpose of excavating the sandstone
product. Such land disturbance, especially on land with significant topographic relief, may create the
potential for erosion due to slopes and denuded mining areas. Stormwater runoff and erosion is
controlled at this quarry through strategically - placed rock berms and diversion dikes to minimize runoff
velocities and sediment transport from the site. Figure 1 indicates the quality of runoff control as
evidenced by the lack of sediment deposits on the adjoining County road.
