Box 33695
Denver, CO 80233 -0695
Re: Colowyo Mine (Permit No. C -1981 -019), Work Area Pond, sealing of dewatering valve
Dear Mr. Gilbreath:
As you may know, there is an ongoing leak in the dewatering gate valve on the primary spillway of the Work
Area Pond at the Colowyo Mine. Attempts by Colowyo staff to solve this problem have been substantial but
they have failed to seal the leak. Therefore, the Division recommends that Colowyo fix this leak by welding
the valve shut. This dewatering valve is not an essential part of the structure and is not required by our rules.
After the revision to the pond is complete, and after the Division confirms that the gate valve was welded
shut, we can approve a minor revision that indicates this change in the design drawing in the Colowyo Permit
Application Package.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 303.866.3567 (extension 8113) or Rob.Zuber@state.co.us.
Sincerely,
Robert Zuber, P.E.
Environmental Protection Specialist Il
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203 P 303.866.3567 F 303.832.8106 http: / /mining.state.co.us
John W.
