Climax Molbden um Climax Mine
Highway 91 - Fremont Pass
Climax, CO 8029
A Freeport-McMoRan Company Phone (719)86-77718
Fax(719) 486-2251
Sent by Certified Mail
September 26,2014 RECEIVED
Mr. Eric Scott
✓Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation,Mining and Safety SFP 2 9 2014
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St. Room 215 DIVISION OF RECLAMATION
Denver,Colorado 80203 MINING AND SAFE7y
RE: SDP Sludge Cell Raise Addendum to Technical Revision 20—Tenmile Tailing Storage Facility,
Climax Mine,Permit No.N-J977-493
Dear Mr. Scott,
This letter and attachments are an addendum to Technical Revision(TR)20-Tenmile Tailing Storage
Facility Design, Stability and Operations and Mcnitoring Plans. The addendum provides information
regarding an elevation raise of the sludge cell co tainment berm for the Sludge Densification Plant(SDP)
located adjacent to the Tenmile Tailing Storage acility(TSF).
The sludge cell is located within the footprint of he Tenmile TSF as shown on the attached drawing. The
sludge'cell berm was raised in 2012 to separate tl ie sludge cell contents from the tailing that was being
deposited in the TSF with the resumption of min g and milling activities at Climax. Climax intends to
continue depositing tailing within the TSF in acc rdance with TR-20 and needs to increase the height of the
berm another 7 feet from its current elevation. S ilar to the 2012 construction and as shown on the attached
drawing,Climax will place tailing material to rai a the core of the berm and then place rip rap to prevent
erosion of the slope. The best material for rip ra that is durable and accessible is rock from the North 40
Overburden Stockpile Facility(described in TR- 2). Climax will haul and place up to 5,000 cubic yards of
this material along the outer face of the SDP berr.i.
The North 40 material is nearly identical in chemical composition as the tailing that will be deposited around
it. Also, all water from this area is contained and is either used in the milling process or is treated and
discharged in accordance with CDPS permit CO 000248.
Please accept this letter and attachments as an addendum to TR-20 for your files. Climax also will maintain
this information with our copies of TR-20.
Sincerely,
1 P-5114
Raymond Lazuk
Environmental Manager
attachments
