9/19/2014 State.co.us Executive Branch Mail-RE:TASK-before you leave.FW:St.Vrain&Gravel Mines Follow-up
STATE OF
40 GOLORADO
RE: TASK-before you leave. FW: St.Wain &Gravel Mines Follow-up
Shafer,Tim<tshafer@bouldercounty.org> Thu,Sep 18,2014 at 5:18 PM
To:"michaela.cunningham@state.co.us"<michaela.cunningham@state.co.us>
Cc:"Spaulding,Susan"<sspaulding@bouldercounty.org>,"DeLeo,Claire"<cdeleo@bouldercounty.org>
Hi Michael,
I am a wildlife biologist with Boulder County Parks&Open Space studying Preble's on county properties. I was asked by Claire Deleo, our Senior Plant Ecologist,to share
with you some information on our findings from the small mammal trapping we did this summer. Below is some general information on Preble's and Preble's
conservation,as well as some maps illustrating occupied habitat at the properties of interest. We caught Preble's on both the Golden-Fredstrom and Western Mobile
properties this summer. While we do have exact locations for our captures, these are very mobile animals and the extent of connected habitat is the scale that is
appropriate for consideration of Preble's conservation. The area of concern is described below:
• Preble's are very mobile rodents and can travel up to 4 km along linear riparian corridors with sufficient suitable habitat.
• Preble's habitat is defined as 100 m outside the 100-year floodplain(USFWS). However, floodplains in Boulder County are wider than those in other areas within
Preble's distribution,so the defined habitat in Boulder County is not considered to exceed 600 ft.from the center of the stream for streams in Boulder County.
• Riparian areas within 1 mile upstream and 1 mile downstream of a known Preble's capture site are considered occupied habitat. (This includes main stem tributaries
and ditches in occupied reaches). This definition is the basis for the designation of Mouse Management Area under the Environmental Resources Element of the Boulder
County Comprehensive Plan, which seeks to guide effective conservation of Preble's habitat in the county.
• Based on the habitat requirements and basic biology of this species, the entire reach of St.Wain Creek on both the Western Mobile and Golden-Fredstrom
properties,as well as the entire reach of the South Branch ditch on the Western Mobile property, are considered occupied Preble's habitat. Preble's were captured on
each of these stream reaches both pre and post flood.
Golden-Fredstrom Property—Fredstrom Resource(M-2001-016)
Trapped the week of 7/14/2014
Trapped for three nights,(250 traps X three nights=750 trap nights)
Following the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service survey protocol for trapping Preble's,we trapped approximately 1,200 meters of riparian habitat along the north side of St.
Wain Cr.,spanning almost the entire length of the POS property.
Preble's were captured along St.Wain Creek, with evidence of a breeding population(multiple age classes and reproductive females).
(Per the Environmental Resources Element: Yellow=Mouse Management Area,Purple=Potential Restoration Area,Orange=Possible Linkage Habitat. Green=County
Open Space. Triangles=Transect start locations)
hftps:Hmail.google.com/mail/u/O/?ui=2&ik=3al d83e556&view=pt&search=inbox&msg=1488bOfb2a33b 15c&siml=1488bOfb2a33bl 5c 1/6
