CIVIL RLS'!I0URCL5,LLC
ENGINEERS 6 PLANNERS
March 18, 2014
Mr. Eric Scott
Division of Reclamation , Mines, and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
RE: Shores Gravel Mine (Burch Amendment), Permit No. M- 1998 -013; Response to Preliminary
Review
Dear Mr. Scott:
This letter is being generated to satisfy the preliminary review dated January 30, 2014 for the Shores Gravel
Mine:
1. Groundwater Evaluation and Monitoring Plan for the Proposed Bruch Amendment, Weld County,
Colorado.
2. Reclamation Cost justification.
1) Groundwater Evaluation and Monitoring Plan
A proposed groundwater monitoring plan has been implemented. On February 14, 2014 two piezometers
were installed, one in the southeast corner and another in the northwest corner of the property, see attached
well permits submitted to the Division of Water Resources. These piezometers will be continuously
monitored on a monthly basis for the next year with water levels being reported twice a year or more
frequently to the DRMS. Current groundwater levels were 12 feet below ground at the time of drilling in the
southeast portion of the Site and 8 feet below ground in the northwest corner respectively. The groundwater
gradient is approximately from southwest to northeast.
There are a few farm properties to the west, east and north of the Site. This stretch of the alluvial aquifer
contains many slurry walls from other miners and owners The Burch Site proposed slurry wall will be offset
from the perimeter of the Site potentially causing mounding on the south and west and a possible shadow
effect on the north and east in conjunction with the other slurry walls in the area. Existing water levels from
borings done in 2004 on the Shores Pit indicate that water is 8 feet to 11 feet below ground surface.
Bestway proposes once a seasonal baseline water level is determined a trigger level will be quantified and
submitted to the DRMS with a mitigation plan. The current water levels in the wells are shown in the Table
below.
Date
NW -Well
SE -Well
feet below grade)
feet below grade)
3/5/2014
8.25
8.17
3/12/2014
10.50
10.67
3/17/2014
1 10.17
1 10.42
323 FIFTH STREET • P.O.
