August 2013 1 103- 81640A
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Golder Associates Inc. (Golder) is pleased to submit this report to Holcim (US) Inc. (Holcim) summarizing
the drilling, well installation, and hydraulic testing field investigation performed as part of the Groundwater
Characterization and Monitoring Well Installation activities at the Boettcher Limestone Quarry in Laporte,
Colorado (Site). This work was requested by the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(DRMS) in their June 25, 2012 letter to Michael Toelle of Holcim (DRMS 2012), and is described in the
October 23, 2012 Groundwater Characterization Plan (Golder, 2012) and subsequent modifications
approved by DRMS.
The Boettcher Quarry is a former limestone mining and cement production facility. During production,
cement kiln dust (CKD) was generated and disposed in mined -out portions of the Boettcher Quarry
(Holnam 2002; Holcim 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009). Operations ceased in 2002, and reclamation
was subsequently achieved. However, groundwater monitoring and site characterization activities
continue to present day because testing of the CKD indicates that metals may be present in a leachable
state.
As a condition of Permit M -77 -348, groundwater monitoring was implemented in 1999 to evaluate if
metals were being leached to groundwater downgradient of CKD disposal area A2 (Figure 1). Four
monitoring wells, MW -1 through MW -4 (Figure 1) were installed and sampled in 1999, 2000 and 2010 to
the present as part of this work. This report describes the recent field work conducted to further
characterize rock and groundwater at the Site to evaluate an appropriate path forward for the full release
of reclamation liability.
i \10 \81640a\ 0400 \gwcharwellinstallfield rep_09aug 13 \gwcharwellinstal Ifieldrep_09aug 13 docx
9OGolder
Associates
