FMC -low and FMC -up, on the Fire Mountain Canal are required to be monitored in May, July,
and September for field parameters, with a full suite analysis conducted during the first and
third monitoring events. The first monitoring event was forgotten, as noted in comment 1.a.,
above, so no lab analysis was completed. Due to an early shutoff of the canal in August, no
September flow was available for monitoring. As a result, there is no lab data available on the
Fire Mountain Canal for 2012.
3. Groundwater Levels were within baseline ranges.
4. Groundwater Quality was consistent with baseline data and the predictions in the Probable
Hydrologic Consequences section of the permit application package.
5. Alluvium: The Probable Hydrologic Consequences (PHC) of the permit application package predicts
that leachate from the coal stockpiles and refuse areas could impact water quality on the North Fork
of the Gunnison, and notes that water quality degradation is to be expected in the alluvial wells
installed along the river, but that the impact on the North Fork of the Gunnison should be minimal.
Data for the alluvial wells (as shown below) does indicate a general degradation in water quality,
which the Division will continue to monitor. To date, the data for the North Fork is consistent with
the PHC prediction.
Alluvial Wells with 2012 Monitoring Parameters in Excess of
Baseline Averages
Coal Stockpile
Gob Pile No. 1
Loadout
Gob
Pile
No. 2
Parameter
AW -1
AW -3
AW -4
AW -5
AW -6
AW -11
AW -12
AW -17
Bicarbonate
X
X
X
X
Chloride
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
Conductivity
X
Hardness
X
Nitrate - Nitrite
X
X
Ammonia
X
X
X
Phosphate
X
TDS
X
X
X
Sulfate
X
X
X
Arsenic
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
Cadmium
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
Calcium
X
Iron (Diss)
X
X
X
X
Iron (TREC)
X
X
X
X
X
Magnesium
X
X
X
Manganese (Diss)
X
X
Manganese (TREC)
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
Mercury
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
Selenium
X
X
X
X
Sodium
X
X
Zinc
X
X
X
X
6.
