This project is proposed to
be located in Section 9, T 7S, R 102W of the 6`h Principle Meridian on an existing disturbed area
adjacent to Hwy. 139. The acreage to be permitted for burnt shale mining totals 3.27 acres.
CPW would like to offer the following comments with regard to potential impacts this
development may have on wildlife.
The proposed burnt shale pit is located in a mapped elk winter concentration area, mule deer
critical winter range, and turkey winter range. The following best management practices are
recommended to minimize impacts to wildlife:
• Where mining activities must occur in mule deer winter range or elk winter concentration
areas, conduct mining activities outside the time period from December 1 through April
15.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife appreciates the opportunity to work with CDOT and the Division of
Reclamation, Mining and Safety on this and other projects to mitigate impacts to wildlife. If you
have any questions please contact Paul Creeden, District Wildlife Manager, at 970 - 255 -6112.
Since
JT Romatzke, Area Wil ife Manager
cc.
