Mr. John M. Kunst
July 2, 2013
The French drain will be built above the larger pond and below the wash plant. Its
function will be to intercept the slimes from the dewatering area. The slurry from the
sluice will contain material smaller than 3/4 inch and while the larger of this material will
dewater immediately, some sand and silt will not. This material will flow into a
dewatering area (tailings pond) approximately 30 feet by 30 feet by 5 feet deep. This will
allow the sand and some of the slimes time to settle out. A front end loader will be used
multiple times a day to remove the settled material.
The finest material will pass over a 15 foot weir to spread the flow and slow the velocity
of the slimes, and then the material will flow into a gravel pit. The gravel will act as a
filter to help trap the slimes. The filter media will be replaced as needed with fresh
aggregate from the wash plant. The gravel /slimes mix (filter media) will be re- blended
with sand and gravel from the dewatering area. Once well drained, the mix will be stored
along the north edge of the mine, mixed with hay and allowed to compost. It will then be
compacted and seeded with high altitude meadow mix to stabilize it until it is ready to be
used for reclamation.
I understand your concern over traffic to and from the mine. Even though our permit is
capped at 70,000 tops per year, we will not be able produce anywhere near that much
because of a lack of water. That being said, at least 80% of our mined product will have
to go back into the mine face to return the land to its original contour. It is at this time
the organic cap would be placed over the fill and re- vegetated. The decorative rock we
may sell is moss rock, which is only found on the surface and is not in abundance on the
site. In past operations on the site, companies have hand- loaded pallets of moss rock,
wrapped them with wire screen and hauled them out on a short flatbed truck.
If you have any further questions or comments, feel free to contact either Tom
Kaldenbach or me.
Sincerely,
Randy Burks
7964 East Homestead Road
Parker, CO 80138
