PERMIT #: M- 2003 -030
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: TCW
INSPECTION DATE: June 26, 2013
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection occurred as part of the Division's normal monitoring program for active mine permits. Present
with me during the inspection were Ms. Marcia Rose - Ritchie (USFS), Mr. John Brown (USFS), and Mr. Tony
Waldron (DRMS). Mr. Joseph Dorris was present representing the operator during the inspection. The mine
site is located within the Hayman Burn area on a moderate to steeply slope. This area was severely burned in
2002. The soil is largely weathered bedrock (grus) with thin topsoil.
The mine permit (as amended in 2006) is for 17 proposed sites encompassing 9.9 acres of total area on 5 mine
claims: Elk Horn, Smoky Hawk, Blue Smoky, Wolf Fang, and Smoky Dog. Per the permit, about 1/3 to 1/2 acre
will be worked during a year. The present operation is working in the Smoky Hawk and Smoky Dog claims
(shown as Area C on the mine plan map).
Several areas have been reclaimed. These areas look very good and are in various states of revegetation. The
areas that were reclaimed in 2005 are nearly indistinguishable from the native ground. There was one small
excavation where rock hunters (not related to the mine operations) had used hand tools to dig into a
reclaimed area. No active erosion was observed in the permit area. In general, the permit area is in good
condition.
Because of the multiple related mines and NOI in the same vicinity (P- 2003 -030, M- 2003 -030, M- 2006 -034, M-
1993 -030), and since Mr. Dorris indicated that future expansion may occur, the Division recommends that
Glacier Peak convert to a 112 permit that would encompass the entire area of interest. This would allow more
flexibility to follow the pegmatites through the mine claims, streamline the mine operations and permitting
processes, and reduce future confusion on these permits. Bond costs can be based on the maximum area to
be disturbed at any one time to keep costs down and promote reclamation activities.
Availability Of Records:
The last Annual Report and Annual Fees were sent in June 2013. The annual report indicates that
approximately 3.56 acres are currently affected; almost 3 acres have been reclaimed.
Backfilling and Grading:
Previously worked areas have been backfilled and graded to be consistent with surrounding areas.
Gen. Compliance With Mine Plan:
The operator appears to be working in accordance with the mine plan on file from the 2006 amendment.
Roads:
The operator is primarily using existing roads to access the mine sites.
Reclamation Success:
The areas that have been reclaimed are in excellent condition. The Division was impressed with the
reclamation efforts being made by the Operator.
Sediment Control:
