Er
Ms. Kelly Morgan
June 17, 2013
Page 2
Depending on precipitation levels, a small portion of the flow may be stormwater from
the maintenance shop, vegetated topsoil piles, and warehouse areas near the mine office. There
have been no spills or releases from the maintenance shop and warehouse areas that would have
impacted the pH in the pond. The topsoil piles are in good condition without significant erosion.
The pond was designed to handle stormwater runoff from the shop, topsoil piles,
warehouse, and reclamation areas, settling any solids carried with stormwater. There is no active
mining occurring in the area draining to this pond.
Tri -State is in the process of implementing additional controls in Pond 007 through the
use of CO2 to sparge the water, bubbling the CO2 gas through the water to reduce the pH below
9.0. We are working to obtain the equipment from vendors to begin CO2 addition, as soon as
possible. We will provide an update on the pH measurements when the system is operational.
Therefore, the period of upset conditions will be temporary.
Tri -State is committed to remaining in compliance with the permit for this facility. We
will be submitting the Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR) with the complete June dataset by
July 28, 2013.
If you have any questions on this upset condition report, please contact Chantell Johnson
at 303 - 254 -3185 (ciohnson cnitristategt.org) or Tom Fry at 970 - 864 -7590 (tfry c(o wfcnucla.org).
Sincerely,
Barbara A.
