RULE 2 - PERMITS
transect. In addition, all -layer relative cover was calculated using all hits for a particular species,
• divided by the total hits accumulated during sampling of each transect.
During the course of cover sampling, all plant species occurring within the one meter sampling area
along either side of each transect were identified and recorded. Frequency for each plant species
observed during sampling was calculated by dividing the number of sample transects in which the
species was observed by the total number of samples. As such, this value is probably more correctly
known as constancy.
The total number of species within each life form observed in each 100 square meter sample (50 m
transect in length x one meter wide sampling area each side) provides a measure of "species
density ", indicating the relative species richness of different areas. These measures provide a means
of examining progress toward the return of diverse species composition in the reclaimed areas.
Sample Adequacy
Sample adequacy was evaluated based on total live foliar cover by vascular plants using the
following expression:
t
n,,, = (dx)2
Where:
n = Minimum sample size
• s = Sample variance (n -1 degrees of freedom)
d = Precision (0.10 for cover and production)
x = Sample arithmetic mean
t = The ((.10) t -table value for a 1 tail t -test, n -1 degrees of freedom (infinite
degrees of freedom may be used if n >30)
n =Sample size
The comparability of affected and reference areas were calculated using the formula recommended
by CDRMS:
t = X A - X ER
S 2 S 2
P + P
n A n ER
Where:
S2 = Sample variance (pooled)
S2 _(nA-1)S2 +nER -1)S2
/
P \nA -1) +nER -1)
xA = Affected area mean
• xER = Reference area mean
t = Two - tailed t -value with n -1 degrees of freedom
PSCM Permit App. 2.04 -143 6/15/09
