Reclamation Plan
Burnt Shale Pit
A. The reclamation will consist of replacing topsoil on all excavated and disturbed areas. Any
excavated areas will consist of a maximum of 3:1 slopes to prevent erosion. The final grades
will decrease from northwest to southeast. Any onsite drainage will be directed to the south
and captured in existing offsite drainage paths.
B. The existing and historic land use is rangeland with natural vegetation. The proposed post
mining land use will be restored to rangeland with historic vegetation.
C. All historic conditions will be restored excluding elevations. The elevations will changed due to
materials removed from the site. It is anticipated that drainage will flow to the same direction
and in the same flow paths, wildlife will return and use the site, and vegetation cover will be
restored to historic use.
D. The topsoil will be removed and stockpiled onsite. It is anticipated that all topsoil will be
replaced within one year of removal. If topsoil is not replaced within one year the topsoil will
be graded out and reseeded until it is replaced. All disturbed areas will be seeded and fertilized
as recommended by the Natural Resource Conservation Service. Seeding specifications are
attached.
E. The mining sequence is anticipated to begin at the southeastern portion of the pit and continue
northwest. An approximate completion date is dependent on the materials needed. It is
anticipated that a small portion of the pit, up to one acre, will be mined at a single time. Each
portion is anticipated to take an entire year. The process will include removing and stockpiling
all topsoil. Once topsoil is removed the gravels will be removed for offsite use. After gravels
have been removed the reclamation process will begin. This entire process is anticipated to take
an entire year but if the mining process stalls or is extended the stockpiled topsoil will be graded
and reseeded until needed for reclamation. The maximum area of disturbance will be 8 acres.
F. Final grading will slope in the same direction as historic conditions which are from northwest to
southeast. The maximum slope will be 3:1 to prevent erosion. The method used for reseeding
will be drilling and the seeding will be accomplished in the fall. Fertilization will be completed
immediately prior to seeding. The seed mix will be per NRCS specifications. Specifications are
attached. Topsoil will be placed to similar depth as removed. It is anticipated that the topsoil will
have a depth of 4" to 12 ".
