Suitable materials include natiive clay soils, clayey sand soils,
and bedrock materials which am broken down to these soil types ISM, SC, GM, GC and CL). Bedrock materials shall be processed to produce a soil like
material with maximum particle size of 6 inches. The materials used as embankment fill shall have at least 25 percent fines ,(materlal finer than No. 200 sieve).
The field engineer may approve the use of other materials following appropriate laboratory testing.
Unacceptable Fill Materials:
Materials not considered suitable for use as embankment fill include high plasticity clay, silts and cleaner sand and gravel (CH,, ML, SP, SW, GP and GIM.
Also unacceptable are highly carbonaceous materials obtained from bedrock excavations or well- cemented sandstones which do not break down to soil like material.
Highly organic soils or materials containing construction debris are also not acceptable. Frozen soil and mine processing watste are not acceptable,
Fill Placement and Compaction:
Embankment fill shall be placed in thin horizontal lifts (8 to 12 inches loose thickness). The fill shall be moisture conditioned as required to achieve a moisture
content between -2 to +3 percent of optimum moisture content and compacted to at least 95 percent of standard proctor maximum dry density (ASTM D 698).
The placing and spreading of fill materials shall be started at the lowest point of the embankment. Fill placement and compaction shall be observed and tested by
qualified geotechnical engineering firm.
Monitoring and Inspections.
Monitoring and inspections shall be performed by qualified individuals as outlined in Colorado DRMS regulations. Once monitoring point shall be set at the crest of the
embankment approximately over the outlet works or as otherwise directed by the inspector. The northing, easting, and elevation of the monitor point shall be measured
at completion of construction and thereafter at approximately 3 month intervals for one year.
Construction Notes:
1. The field engineer shall adjust the dimensions and elevations in the field to ensure that the total capacity is less than 20
acre -feet and the embankment height is less that 20.0 feet per MSHA procedures.
2. Hatched area of the spillway and outlet section shall be riprapped with 18 inch median
size material
3.
