Collom Area Geology Pre - Feasibility Report
1.0 Introduction and Project Location
Kennecott Energy Company's (KEC) Colowyo Mine, a member of the Rio Tinto
Group, is developing a large scale coal mining operation west of current
mining operations. The Collom Resource area exceeds 3,950 acres with
multiple areas having the potential for mine development. This report
focuses on the 'Collom Phase 1 & 2 Area" or simply the "Collom Mine Area"
(CMA). The CMA was highlighted through several studies as having the best
potential for long -term large -scale surface mining.
This report presents a summary of the geological work performed within the
CMA. Excerpts of previous reports have been incorporated into this report.
1.1 Location and Physiography
The CMA is located in southern Moffat County of northwestern Colorado
between the cities of Craig and Meeker (Figure 1.1). The CMA resides
approximately 5 miles west of Colowyo's current mining operations,
separated by Wilson Creek.
The CMA is accessible via "two- track" dirt roads located along ridge tops and
gulch bottoms.
The CMA physiography consists of broad north sloping ridges incised by
straight narrow gulches. The ridges are covered with range grasses, scrub
oak and sage brush. The gulch bottoms contain various grasses, sage brush
as well as thick growths of scrub oak and occasional stands of aspen trees.
The CMA is flanked to the west by Collom Gulch and to the east by West Fork
of Jubb Creek. These gulches contain small intermittent /perennial creeks.
The CMA is bisected by Little Collom Gulch that contains a small ephemeral
creek, see Plate 1.1.
Plate 1.1
August 2005 Page 1 of 38
