Collom Area Geology Pre - Feasibility Report
Additionally, cross - sections from the geological model spanning the southern
end of Wilson Creek show the Collom side of Wilson Creek as being about 50'
to 100' feet lower than the Colowyo side of Wilson Creek, see Cross Section
EW04 in Appendix I. However, no surface mappable features indicate a fault
in Wilson Creek.
3.7 Miscellaneous Geological Issues
3.7.1 Abandoned Geophysical Probe
On October 31, 1981, Savage Geophysical lost a geophysical logging probe
with a radioactive source in drill hole DF -59. The probe was not recovered
and the drill hole was plugged and abandoned.
The drill hole files indicate that W.R. Grace & Company (Grace) was in close
contact with the BLM during this incident. However, the files do not indicate
whether Grace notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of the lost probe.
Thus, the long -term impacts to Colowyo are unknown.
According to drill hole files, the probe was lost in the Trout Creek Sandstone
at a depth of approximately 950 feet. Therefore, the probe is located far
beneath any planned mining in the CMA.
3.7.2 X -Seam Coal Resources and Potential Spoil Site
The X -Seam is known to crop out along the valley sides at north end Little
Collom Gulch, where an out -of -pit spoil dump is planned for mining. The average
thickness of the X3 and X4 seams is approximately 4.7 feet and 5.9 feet,
respectively, in seven holes drilled in 2005. Based on this new drilling, the X
seam might need to be mined prior to placing mine spoils in the area. Colowyo is
currently reviewing developing mine plans for extracting the X seam in the area.
August 2005 Page 11 of 38
